SPRINGFIELD (AP) — MGM Resorts is expanding its casino campaign to all of western Massachusetts after winning the support of Springfield voters.
MGM said in a statement that company officials are reaching out Wednesday to municipal officials in surrounding communities in an effort to convince them that its proposed $800 million casino in downtown Springfield would be good for the region as a whole.
Springfield voters on Tuesday backed MGM’s deal with the city by a 58 percent to 42 percent margin. The vote was a prerequisite for the company to apply to the state gambling commission for the sole western Massachusetts casino license.
Palmer town councilor Paul Burns congratulated MGM on the referendum results but said Mohegan Sun’s proposed casino in the town would provide a greater economic benefit to the region.
