Mike Augusti’s Rawk Report: Welcome back Springfield

SPRINGFIELD – Springfield, Massachusetts, are you ready to RAAAAAWK! I haven’t heard that from a rawk band standing on stage in Springfield in a very long time. But here we are a mere three months into the year and there are already two rawk shows announced for the MMC. A couple of weeks ago an announcement was made on Styx, REO Speedwagon and Ted Nugent coming to the MMC on April 23. Now another show was announced that has Shinedown, Bush and Airborne coming in to the arena on May 1. This is great news for area rawk fans that constantly see bands bypass Springfield, for either Mohegan Sun arena, sometimes the Mullins Center and even the Tsongas Arena in Lowell, MA. Is this possibly the beginning of things to come and we will finally get some more rawk shows back in Springfield???
Back in its heyday the Springfield Civic Center consistently had great shows coming in to town. Everyone from Elvis Presley and The Grateful Dead to Kiss and Nirvana has played the Civic Center. Some of my greatest concert memories are of shows in Springfield. Not to date myself too much, but during the 80’s, every single major touring act stopped in Springfield and I attended many of those shows back then. Although, Once the MassMutual Center acquired the Civic Center, the concert scene has dried up quickly. The Springfield concert scene was not helped by the closing of the Paramount/Hippodrome either. Let’s hope these new events will get Springfield back on every band’s tour stop in the future. Tickets for both shows are available through Ticketmaster or the MassMutual Center box office.

RAWK Shows
A reminder that Enter The Haggis has a couple of stops coming up locally. The Wolf’s Den at Mohegan Sun has the band stopping by on March 14. The next night brings them a little closer at the Palace Theater in Stafford Springs, CT. Then on March 17, ETH will play the Center for Arts in Natick MA. Keep an eye out for their latest release, The Modest Revolution, on March 30.
Check this out from the 1970’s: Nazareth is headlining a show at the Mohegan Sun Arena on June 27. I am guessing the arena will be cut in half for a more intimate show. Tickets are going on sale Friday through Ticketmaster.
Danish rawkers Volbeat have announced a Boston date for May 1 at the House of Blues. This will be in support of a soon to be released album in April. Still waiting and hoping for a show in Connecticut on this tour.

Just announced and going on sale Friday, Fun with special guests Tegan and Sara, will play the Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport CT on September 28. Visit Ticketmaster’s site for more information.
The Webster Theater in Hartford has announced a couple of new shows for May. Industrial metalists Fear Factory will be there on May 1 and rawkers Jackyl will be there May 7. Tickets for both are on sale and available through tickets.com.
Lupo’s Heartbreak Hotel in Providence, RI has also announced two new shows. The Darkness returns to the area on May 13 with Airbourne opening. The current band that has split in two, Queensryche, with original singer Geoff Tate will play their entire Operation Mindcrime record from start to finish on June 7. It’s been 25 years since that amazing record came out.
