WESTFIELD – Nancy A. (Mayhew) Garen, 82, of Westfield, passed away on Monday, October 28, 2019. Born on July 12, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Oliver K. and Helen (Oswiany) Mayhew. Nancy leaves her husband, William J. Garen, who she was married to for 57 years (Oct. 13, 1962). Nancy was selfless and giving to so many people, whether it be through her church involvement, community volunteerism or socializing with friends and family. She was often known to be the life of the party and had a great sense of humor right to the very end. Nancy also leaves three children: Steven Garen and his wife, Sandra from Russell; Christine Clemens and her husband, Reade from Plainville, CT; and Cathy Slater from Agawam. She also leaves three beloved grandchildren: Tyler Clemens and his new bride, Ashley; Kelsey Clemens and Madison Slater, all whom she loved with her whole heart. Nancy was a member of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Parish for 57 years. She taught CCD for 29 of those years and was recognized with the Pope Pius X Award. She also served as Eucharistic Minister; President of Parish Council; Founder and Member of Family Life Commission; President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer (at various times) of the Rosary Sodality; Co-chair of the Holly Days Craft Fair for 18 years; and volunteered at the local soup kitchen. Nancy was a member of the Westfield Women’s Club and volunteered at Baystate Noble Hospital creating flower arrangements. Nancy worked for Replacement Parts Service in Enfield, CT for many years. After retiring in 2006, Nancy went back to work as a receptionist for Images Hair Salon. At a very young age, she owned and operated “The Yarn Barn”. Over the years, Nancy taught many local people the art of knitting and crocheting. She loved to knit, read, cook and spend time with her family.
Calling hours will be held at Firtion Adams Funeral Home, 76 Broad Street, Westfield, MA, from 2-5 pm on Sunday, November 3, 2019. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament in Westfield on Monday, November 4, 2019 at 11:30 am. Burial will be at the Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery in Agawam, MA at 1:00 pm. firtionadams.com
