‘Senior Night’ festivities abound in Huntington, Westfield

HUNTINGTON – Gateway Regional senior girls’ soccer player Chelsea Merritt had a big smile on her face with balloons and hugs all around on senior night Wednesday at home. She wore an even wider grin at the end of the evening after scoring the game-winner for the Lady Gators.
Merritt scored the game’s only goal Wednesday on a pass from Jamie Pease in the 72nd minute to lift Gateway past Granby. The Gators improved to 9-1-3.
Gateway goalie Brooke Fairman (3 saves) earned the shutout.
In Westfield, “senior night” activities also took place last night when the Lady Bombers hosted the Agawam Brownies at Bullens Field.

St. Mary 4, Commerce 0
Four different players scored for red-hot St. Mary (12-4-1). Saints’ Alison Stanlewicz, Darby Bailey, Selina Morasi, and Alex Mitchell each netted one goal.
Taylor Marshall contributed two assists, and Marguerite Butler and Monica Hannoush had one apiece.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Southwick-Tolland 3, Commerce 1
Southwick (5-8-2) staved off elimination with a big win over Commerce (15-2).
Andrae Campbell scored two goals, and Anthony Whitehead had one. Campbell’s first goal was set up by David Kisala. His second tally came on a penalty kick midway through the second half.
Rams’ goalkeeper Tim Schmidt made nine saves.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Easthampton def. Southwick 25-21, 25-17, 26-24
Simone Thibault had eight digs, Sara Collins had seven, and Jess Martin collected six service points and two aces for Southwick (7-11), which was eliminated from tournament contention with the loss.
