SOUTHAMPTON — The principal of a Dedham elementary school has been hired as assistant principal at the William E. Norris School and will start work Jan. 4.
Philip Banios was selected by a search committee to replace Barbara Barlow as assistant principal after her retirement Monday from Norris. Barlow worked for nine years at the elementary school.
Banios has served as principal of Greenlodge Elementary School in Dedham for two years. He previously worked as principal in Bedford and assistant principal in Sherborn and Groveland and has taught both second and fifth grades, according to Boston.com.
A search committee made up of Norris principal Aliza casino Pluta, parents, teachers, a union representative and school staffers last month interviewed 12 candidates out of 27 applicants. Banios was one of three finalists and selected due to his experience in educational leadership roles, Pluta said.
“He is highly motivated, energetic, and understands the social/emotional well being of students and has experience leading curriculum and instruction,” Pluta said in an email.
Banios plans to visit Norris one day this month before school closes for vacation during the holidays, Pluta said.
