WESTFIELD – City police have determined who owns the pistol found late last month near City View Road but they still don’t know how it got to Westfield.
A City View Boulevard resident came to the station July 24 to surrender an unloaded .22 caliber revolver he reported finding in wooded area near City View Road and later showed police officers the area near Jack’s Brook where it was found.
A detective said at the time that the gun did not fit the description of any pistols lost or stolen in the city and noted that the gun had very little rust or other evidence of exposure to the elements.
Det. Lt. David Ragazzini said Tuesday that he has since discovered where the gun came from.
The pistol was stolen, he reports, in Berkshire County on Feb. 12, 2012, but said “we just don’t know where it was between February, 2012, and when we found it.”
“Clearly (it) had not been sitting there all that time” he said, “it was in way too good shape.”
