Monday, Aug. 27, 2012
9:43 a.m.: larceny, Colonial Pine Acres, 50 Southampton Road, a resident came to the station to report that gold jewelry was stolen from her residence, the responding officer reports the caller said that only one person who knew of the jewelry had been in the residence, the case was referred to the detective bureau;
10:59 a.m.: identity fraud, St. Dennis Street, a resident came to the station to reports his social security number has been misused, the responding officer reports the man said that he had filed his tax returns in April and when he did not receive a refund he eventually contacted the IRS, the man said that he was told that a return with his social security number had already generated a refund, the man was advised the report the matter to police;
11:35 a.m.: disturbance, Dubois Street, a resident came to the station to report she was assaulted, the responding officer reports the woman said that the father of one of her children had come to dinner and an argument developed over finances, the woman said that she upset the man’s plate and they began to punch each other, the woman said that the man struck her with a glass cup causing a laceration which required 12 sutures, the woman said that she did not immediately report the incident because her children were due home from school and she did not want them to be aware of the incident, a criminal complaint for assault and battery was filed;
3:06 p.m.: accident, North Road at Old County Road, multiple callers report a rollover accident, the responding officer reports he found that a Mack dump truck had rolled over and the operator’s arm was pinned by the vehicle, the man was extricated and transported to Baystate Medical Center where he was initially reported to be in “critical” condition but was upgraded to “fair” condition by Wednesday morning; see front page of Tuesday’s edition of The Westfield News;
3:38 p.m.: officer wanted, Roosevelt Avenue, a caller reports his daughter is being followed by a female party who has been bullying her, the responding officer reports the 12-year-old girl said that she had been at Sadie Knox playground with friends when she saw a 13-year-old schoolmate who has been harassing her was also there so she left, the victim said that the suspect followed with two male parties and she was pushed and harassed when the other girl accosted her, the officer spoke with the suspect who he found at the playground who readily admitted following the victim and yelling at her but denied pushing her, the two boys with her said that she had pushed the victim, the girl was transported to her home where her elder brother was asked to ask his parents to call the officer, the officer reports he was flagged down by an older man who reported he had seen the suspect push the victim, the officer spoke with the victim’s father who said that the girls have had ongoing issues and he has spoken with school officials about them;
4:05 p.m.: narcotics violation, Crane Avenue, officers discovered marijuana growing at a Crane Avenue address, the officers established that the plants had been cultivated for personal use without commercial intent, the crop was confiscated and a city ordinance violation citation was issued;
5:26 p.m.: breaking and entering, Canal Drive, a resident came to the station to report his home was entered and property was stolen, the responding officer reports the man said that for the past three months he has been unable to find various items in his home and, although he initially thought he had misplaced the property, he has come to believe they have been stolen although there have been no signs of forcible entry, missing are a GPS device, a camera and two boxes of valuable foreign coins, the man said that although he does not suspect his estranged wife would have taken the items he asked her and she denied knowledge of the missing property, the case was referred to the detective bureau;
6:30 p.m.: animal complaint, Cornish Drive, a detective reports what appears to be an injured hawk, an environmental police officer responded and was unable to determine if the bird was injured but said he would return on Tuesday to check on the hawk;
6:50 p.m.: larceny, Mechanic Street, a caller reports a suspect who was stripping his vehicle fled when accosted, the responding officer reports the caller said that he came home to find a known male party stripping parts from his vehicle, the man said the suspect fled without any of the parts but said that the parts which had been removed were damaged, the man said that he checked an adjacent vacant residence and found evidence to suggest that the suspect had been living there, criminal complaints for malicious damage to property and for trespass were filed;
8:19 p.m.: animal complaint, Jeremy Drive, a caller reports a large tagged bird is under a car in her driveway, the responding officer reports he identified the bird as a homing pigeon and said that, as the bird is neither endangered nor protected, there was nothing the police can do about it;

3:20 a.m.: breaking and entering, Atwater Street, a caller reports she was awakened by a noise and found her wallet missing, the responding officer reports a noise in her kitchen awoke her and she investigated to find the rear sliding door open, the woman said she then noticed that her wallet was missing from the shelf where she keeps it, the sliding door had not been locked;
7:47 a.m.: flooding, East Mountain Road at Springfield Road, a caller reports a co-worker called and said that she is trapped in her vehicle under the railroad viaduct and the water is rising, dual response dispatched, the responding officer requests a tow, the DPW was notified and responded to clear the storm drains, the vehicle was towed to the police impound yard;
9:29 a.m.: disturbance, West Road, a caller reports a family member has made threats and is armed, see story in Wednesday’s edition of The Westfield News;
10:14 a.m.; found property, Cycle Street, a caller reports an abandoned bicycle, the responding officer reports the bike was transported to the station for safe keeping;
12:34 p.m.: threat to commit a crime, Prospect Street, a resident came to the station to report she has been threatened by her former boyfriend, the responding officer reports the woman said that she is scheduled to testify in a pending court case against her incarcerated former boyfriend, the woman said that her aunt received a letter from the suspect in which he threatens to kill her if she testifies, a warrant for threatening to commit a crime (murder) and intimidating a witness was filed;
4:56 p.m.: larceny, Big Y, 475 E. Main Street, a store manager requests an officer for a shoplifter who has been detained in the store, the responding officer reports that before he arrived he was advised that the store management had cancelled the request for an officer because the suspect had been released with a warning;
5:16 p.m.: disturbance, West Road, a caller reports his uncle and father are fighting, the responding officer reports the caller’s father said that he had objected when he observed his brother-in-law “driving like an idiot” and the man stopped, exited the vehicle with an ax handle in his hand, and threw it at him, the resident said the ax handle did not hit him and he picked it up, when his brother-in-law advanced in a threatening manner he told him to stay away or he would defend himself whereupon the suspect assaulted him and he struck the man in the face with the ax handle, the suspect’s parents supported their son’s-in-law account, criminal complaints for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon were filed against both men;
9:17 p.m.: vandalism, Westfield Vocational-Technical High School, a custodian reports he heard breaking glass and investigated to find windows had been shattered on two vehicles outside, the responding officer reports he encountered four youths on the other side of the school who denied any knowledge of the incident, the officer reports a routine check of the youths’ identification revealed one had been reported as a missing person, the boy was transported to the station where a Department of Children and Families worker took custody of him.
