5:58 a.m.: suspicious person, Main Street, a caller reports a person is sleeping in a bank’s ATM vestibule, the responding officer reports he found a homeless man leaving the ATM area who said that he had been sleeping in the vestibule to keep warm because there was no bed for him at the Samaritan Inn, see 11:47 p.m. entry;
11:24 a.m.: parking violation, Springfield Road, a patrol officer reports all the handicap spaces in the parking lot of a Springfield Road department store were occupied and his inspection of the handicap placards revealed that one appeared to be a photocopy, the officer reports that two women approached the SUV and he asked to see the placard, the officer reports the photo on the placard looked like neither of the women and he was told that the woman pictured was the grandmother of one of the women who was not with them, one of the women said that she needed her own handicap placard and the officer advised her how to apply for one, a citation was issued;
12:16 p.m.: fire, Feeding Hills Road, a caller reports her vehicle is on fire in her attached garage, dual response dispatched, firefighters report heavy smoke was showing upon arrival and the fire was extinguished, the SUV and contents were a total loss, the responding officer reports the victim said that the four-week-old 2015 Ford Explorer was not in use when the fire started and had been parked in the garage after a smell of burning plastic was observed when the heater was used;
1:07 p.m.: school investigation, Westfield Vocational-Technical High School, 33 Smith Ave., a school resource officer reports he was advised that an assistant principal learned that a boy was in possession of marijuana and a search revealed a jar containing a small amount of contraband, administrative sanctions were applied;
1:34 p.m.: fire, Woodside Terrace, a caller reports a resident is burning, the responding officer reports firefighters were busy but the resident showed him a form and said when he was at the fire station he was told he could burn, the officer advised the man that the deputy fire chief now wants the fire extinguished because of the wind and the resident complied without incident;
3:01 p.m.: annoying phone calls, Shannon Lane, a caller reports the grandmother has been receiving multiple calls from a person claiming she has won a lottery, the woman said that her grandmother was told that someone would come to her house to take her to her bank to withdraw the funds needed to claim her prize, an officer was dispatched to assure the resident that the calls are a scam and should be ignored, the woman was told to call 911 if someone comes to her home about the calls;
5:58 p.m.: larceny, East Silver Street, a caller from an East Silver Street supermarket reports a shoplifter is in custody, the responding officer reports the woman was served a ‘No trespassing’ order;
8:06 p.m.: breaking and entering, East Bartlett Street, a caller reports he returned to his home to find a window had been pried open, the responding officer reports the caller said that nothing is missing, the officer reports that there are no footprints near the window and no entry appears to have been gained;
8:46 p.m.: found property, Franklin Street, a person came to the station to surrender a driver’s license and a debit card he said were found at a Franklin Street gas station, the responding officer reports no immediate contact with the owner, day shift officers will attempt to return the owner’s property;
11:05 p.m.: motor vehicle violation, Court Street, a patrol officer reports a vehicle seen speeding past Park Square made an improper lane change and was stopped, the officer reports he immediately observed that the operator appeared to be intoxicated and the man failed a field sobriety test, Manolie G. Underwood, 20, of 8 Pierce St., Greenfield, was arrested for operating under the influence of liquor, speeding and a marked lanes violation;
11:47 p.m.: officer wanted, East Main Street, a caller reports a known party has been at a gas station for hours saying he has no place to go, the responding officer reports the Samaritan Inn was contacted and a representative said that no beds were available, the man was provided a courtesy transport to a Springfield shelter.
