2:32 a.m.: trespassing, Chapman Playground, St. Paul St., a patrol officer reports he encountered about 10 youths playing basketball at the playground, the officer reports the youths were advised of the pertinent city ordinance and left the area without incident;
8:44 a.m.: found property, South Maple Street, a resident came to the station to report finding a BMX style bicycle in bushes near his home, the man said that he thought the bike probably belonged to one of his children’s friends so he kept it for two days but since it has not been claimed he brought it to the station for safe keeping;
10:07 a.m.: animal complaint, Susan Drive, a caller reports finding a cat in a crate on the side of the road, the caller reports the Westfield Homeless Cat Project took custody of the cat;
10:58 a.m.: animal complaint, Heritage Lane, a caller reports a fox which appears to be sick is in her yard, the responding officer reports the caller directed him to her porch and he looked underneath to see a fox laying down, the officer reports he was unable to dispatch the fox and advised the resident to continue to monitor the situation;
4:29 p.m.: vandalism, Elm Street, a business owner came to the station to report vandalism to a neon sign at an Elm Street business, the responding officer reports the complainant said that a neighbor reported seeing youths damage the sign about 1 a.m.;
6:37 p.m.; larceny, Walmart, 141 Springfield Road, a caller reports a male party is in the bathroom shoplifting, the responding officer reports the 16-year-old boy was served a “no trespassing” order because he was caught stealing trading cards, the boy’s father was advised of the incident;
6:44 p.m.: fire, Susan Drive, a caller reports a kitchen fire, the responding firefighters report the resident said that the oil in a deep fat fryer ignited and the fryer was taken outside the structure, the firefighters report the burning container was covered and thus extinguished;

Monday, July 16, 2012
12:49 a.m.: trespassing, Half Mile Falls Park, persons were seen in the park via security monitors, the responding officer reports the persons found were advised of the permissible hours of use of the parks and were sent on their ways;
6:39 a.m.; noise complaint, Highland School, 34 Western Avenue, a caller reports contractors working at Highland school are making an unreasonable amount of noise for the hour and told him he would have to deal with it when he advised them of the city ordinance prohibiting such noise prior to 7 a.m., the responding officer reports that the noise was unreasonable for the hour and that the supervisor said that he had to start work at 6 a.m., the contractor was very reluctant to comply with the officer’s instructions to obey the ordinance but eventually said he would and said he would seek a variance at City Hall;
11:03 a.m.: fire, Highland View Street, a caller reports seeing smoke coming from a neighbor’s property, dual response dispatched, the responding firefighters report a homeowner was burning brush and he extinguished his fire when firefighters arrived;
11:36 a.m.: fraud, Main Street, a resident came to the lobby to complain that a G&E account was opened in her name, the responding officer reports the woman said that she applied for a G&E account and was advised that an account in her name and social security number is about $3,000 in arrears, the woman said that she recognized the site of service to be a former address of her mother, the woman said she confronted her mother who admitted opening the account with her information, the woman said that she and her mother have an appointment to meet with a G&E representative to resolve the issue;
1:15 p.m.: fraud, Southampton Road, a financial crimes unit detective reports an elderly woman was victimized by a scam, see story in Tuesday’s edition of The Westfield News;
8:31 p.m.: found property, Meadow Street, a caller reports finding a wallet on the sidewalk and requests that an officer pick it up, the responding officer reports he took custody of the wallet and took it to the last known address found in police records for the owner but was told that the owner has not lived at that address for about five years, the wallet was transported to the station for safe keeping;
9:12 p.m.: noise complaint, Simmons Brook Drive, a caller reports a neighbor is disturbing her peace by chopping wood and using a chain saw, the responding officer reports he found a resident splitting wood who agreed to stop for the night.
