Saturday, March 29, 2014
1:19 a.m.: disturbance, Russell Road, a caller reports 20-30 college-aged youths are fighting in a parking lot, the responding officers report they arrived to find about 50 vehicles parked nearby, numerous persons outside with containers of beer and persons urinating outside, the officers report there was no answer at the door for at least five minutes despite obvious indications that many persons were inside, officers identified three tenants and two were cooperative, many guests left and officers noted a strong odor of burnt marijuana about many of them, one of the tenants was uncooperative and when advised that she could be charged criminally she taunted the officers by telling them to go ahead and charge her, a criminal complaint for disturbing the peace was filed;
1:45 a.m.: accident, Main Street, a caller reports a car struck a utility pole, the responding officer reports the operator involved in the single vehicle crash said she was not injured, the woman appeared to be intoxicated, agreed to submit to field sobriety tests but predicted she would fail, the woman proved to be correct, Sarah Alice Kennedy, 25, of 51 Van Deen Ave., West Springfield, was arrested for operating a motor vehicle under the influence of liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and a marked lanes violation;
2:20 a.m.: motor vehicle violation, Broad Street, a patrol officer reports a vehicle operating against the traffic pattern around Park Square was stopped, the operator failed a field sobriety test, Patrick M. Holmes, 20, of 70 Cliffwood St., Lee, was arrested for operating a motor vehicle under the influence of liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle and a one way street violation;
4:40 a.m.: accident, Main Street at Mainline Drive, a patrol officer reports he found that a traffic light standard had been knocked over by a vehicle which did not stop, the state highway department was notified that the light was knocked over and bare wires were exposed;
9:09 a.m.: vandalism, Mechanic Street, a caller reports DPW signs have been torn out and thrown to his yard, the responding officer reports the business owner who called said that his security video shows a member of a group of youths uproot the signs and discard them, a copy of the security video will be forwarded to the Detective Bureau;
9:36 a.m.: officer wanted, Elm Street, a caller from an Elm Street liquor store reports finding a hypodermic syringe behind the store, the responding officer reports the syringe was disposed of properly;
9:50 a.m.: animal complaint, Westfield Animal Shelter, 178 Apremont Way, the animal control officer reports a labradoodle dog was surrendered at the shelter;
10:15 a.m.: suspicious activity, East Mountain Road, a patrol officer reports he observed a male party cutting trees in a field posted ‘No trespassing’, the officer reports that he was unable to contact a representative of the business which owns the property, the man was found not to be felling trees but cutting up deadfalls, the man claimed not to have seen the ‘No trespassing’ signs and was advised to leave and return only with written permission to cut more wood;
1:25 p.m.: motor vehicle violation, a patrol officer reports a traffic stop, the vehicle’s registration was found to be expired and non-renewable, the vehicle was towed to the police impound yard;
2:12 p.m.: larceny, Springfield Road, a caller reports a shoplifter has fled the store, the responding officer reports he was told that employees had seen a suspect selecting food items and the man fled when they approached him when he attempted to leave the store without making payment, merchandise valued at $23.36 was recovered, the suspect fled on foot and employees lost track of him but the officer saw a person emerging from the woods and stopped him after a brief chase, Mark A. Reed, 47, of 23 Griffin Place, Feeding Hills, was arrested for shoplifting by asportation;
11:00 p.m.: found property, a caller from a local fast food restaurant reports finding a purse, the responding officer reports that the owner appears to be a Northampton resident, a dispatcher contacted Northampton police in an effort to find the owner and the purse was stored for safe keeping;

9:30 a.m.: assault, Broad Street, a resident came to the station to report that he was assaulted at a local bar on March 3, the responding officer reports he found that the caller had been escorted from the bar on that date, the case was referred to the Detective Bureau for further investigation;
10:00 a.m.: motor vehicle violation, Southampton Road, a patrol officer reports a traffic stop, the responding officer reports the vehicle’s registration was found to be expired and a tow was summoned, the officer reports the operator used his cellphone to renew his registration, the operator paid the tow truck driver and left the area;
10:08 a.m.: accident, Park Square, multiple callers report a tractor trailer truck knocked over three or four of the bollards surrounding the Green, the officer reports the truck was identified but he was not immediately able to contact the operator;
12:32 p.m.: burning complaint, Charles Street, a caller reports neighbors are burning in a barrel, the responding fire captain reports the residents were advised to extinguish the fire and complied;
2:07 p.m.: larceny, East Main Street, a caller from an East Main Street drug store reports a shoplifter left with a box of diapers and is walking in the area, the responding officer reports the suspect was found and detained, Carlos R. Lopez, 46, of 7 Free St., was arrested for shoplifting by asportation and shoplifting merchandise valued more than $100 by asportation;
4:02 p.m.: sexual offense, Meadow Street, a caller reports a male party can be seen masturbating in public, the responding officer reports he spoke with the suspect;
8:45 p.m.: assist other agency, Sibley Avenue, officers became aware that a local man was the subject of a probation warrant and sought the subject at one of his previous addresses in the city, the officers were told that the man was not welcome at his relatives’ home and was reported to be living in Springfield.
