12:53 a.m.: motor vehicle violation, Meadow Street, a patrol officer reports he observed a vehicle operating at a high rate of speed and used radar to determine the vehicle was traveling at 49 mph in a 35 mph, the vehicle was stopped and the officer found that the inspection sticker was not valid and the operator’s license had been suspended, Marcus A. Irwin, 32, of 60 Taylor St., Holyoke, was arrested for operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license (a subsequent offense), operating a motor vehicle without a valid inspection sticker and speeding in violation of special regulations;
7:17 a.m.: larceny, Sterling Street at Coolidge Avenue, a detail officer reports he was told by a member of the construction crew at his site that diesel fuel valued at about $150 was siphoned from a bucket loader at the site, the employee told the officer that he does not require a formal report but wants the incident documented;
8:02 a.m.: accident, Southampton Road, multiple callers report a motorcyclist was injured in a collision with a bear, see story in the Thursday edition of The Westfield News;
12:59 p.m.: assist citizen, Mechanic Street, a caller requests an officer to keep the peace as he recovers property at a Mechanic Street address, the responding officer reports the man retrieved all of his belongings without incident;
2:28 p.m.: animal complaint, Westfield Animal Shelter, 178 Apremont Way, the director of animal control operations reports a person came to the shelter to surrender a male Brittany spaniel dog the person could no longer care for;
3:16 p.m.: vandalism, Franklin Street, a caller reports his pool was damaged, the responding officer reports the caller said that he returned home from a vacation to find his above-ground pool had been holed;
4:40 p.m.: fraud, St. Dennis St., a resident came to the station to report she had been targeted by a telephone scam, the responding officer reports the scam in the ‘Jamaican’ scam in which a caller claims that the target has won a prize but must pay ‘taxes and fees’ in order to claim it;
6:44 p.m.: fire, City View Road, a caller reports a large fire outside a residence, the responding fire captain reports a large bonfire had been extinguished prior to his arrival.
