Monroe Street now one-way
WESTFIELD – Following action by the City Council to change the relevant city ordinance, Monroe Street is now a one way thoroughfare with traffic allowed only in the northbound direction.
The council took the action in December in response to a recommendation by the Traffic Commission.
Parking, which has been allowed only on the west side of the street, will not be changed.
The change is effective immediately but will not be enforced for 30 days.
Rep. Humason schedules office hours
Don Humason, Jr., Westfield’s State Representative, and his Legislative Aide, Maura Cassin, will hold public office hours at the Westfield Athenaeum on Monday, Feb. 6, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
The Athenaeum is located in the center of Westfield on the corner of Court Street and Elm Street. Office hours will be held in the Reed Room and all are welcome to come, visit, and share their thoughts or concerns on state matters with Representative Humason.
Representative Humason and his Legislative Aide, Maura Cassin, are available meet with constituents at their district office located at 64 Noble Street in Westfield. No appointment is necessary, but calling ahead to (413) 561-1366 is recommended in case they are at the State House.

‘Meet and Greet’ with Congressman Neal
SOUTHWICK – The Southwick Democratic Committee will be hosting a “Meet and Greet” with Congressman Richard Neal on Thursday, Feb. 9, at 7:00 p.m. at the Senior Center in the Southwick Town Hall, 454 College Highway, Southwick.

Public Meeting focuses on Dog Park
WESTFIELD – A Public Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 9, at 6:30 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at City Hall to discuss and answer questions concerning the possibility of placing a dog park at the Paper Mill Recreation area. Concerned citizens are urged to attend.
The Parks and Recreation Commission has been working with the local “Dog Bark” nonprofit, local resident organization in finding a suitable location for Westfield’s first ever dog park. For more than 18 months various locations have been visited and studied as well as checking each with other City Departments to make sure such a location would be appropriate.
After countless meetings and discussions the Commission is primed to announce that the Parks and Recreation land area at the Paper Mill Recreation area could likely be the new home for Westfield’s first ever dog park. Final plans and arrangements for an agreement with the “Dog Bark” non-profit organization could be finalized shortly.
This group is headed by President Edward Phillips of Westfield. Marilyn Sandidge, a board member of the “Dog Bark” organization and her committee has worked tirelessly to find a suitable location for Westfield residents to bring their dogs to exercise, run and be free with other dogs in a natural, safe and comfortable location.
A final vote of the site selection of the Paper Mill Recreation area location by the Park Recreation Commission is expected at their February 27th meeting.
 
Westfield Democrats to hold caucus
WESTFIELD – Westfield Democrats will hold a caucus on February 11 at the Dolan-Ely Apartment Complex Common Room from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. The caucus is to elect delegates for the Massachusetts Democratic Convention to be held Saturday, June 2, in Springfield. The caucus is open to all registered Democrats in Westfield.

Southwick Democrats to elect delegates
SOUTHWICK – Democrats in Southwick will be holding a caucus at the Southwick Town Hall, 454 College Highway on Saturday, February 11, at 10:00 a.m. to elect four delegates and two alternates to the 2012 Massachusetts Democratic Convention, where Democrats from across Massachusetts will select candidates to compete for the Democratic nomination for U. S. Senate. The convention will be held on Saturday, June 2, at the Mass Mutual Center in Springfield.
The caucus is open to all registered Democrats in Southwick, and the Democratic Committee warmly welcomes participants.  Delegates will be divided equally between men and women. To vote in the caucus, Democrats must have been registered as Democrats as of December 31, 2011, and must be in line by 10:15 a.m.
The Southwick Democratic Committee normally meets on the second Thursday of the month at 7:00 p.m. at the Southwick Town Hall in The Land Use Room. For more information on the caucus or the committee please contact Beth Malone at [email protected] or 413-998-3278.

Annual Republican Brunch planned
WESTFIELD – The Westfield Republican City Committee will host their annual Lincoln’s Day Brunch on Sunday, Feb. 12, 10:00 a.m. to noon, at the East Mountain Country Club, 1458 E Mountain Road Westfield. State Senator Michael Knapik and State Representative Don Humason will serve as this year’s hosts.

Southwick plans Presidential Primary
SOUTHWICK – The Town of Southwick Clerk’s Office would like to inform all residents that the last day to register to vote for the Presidential Primary will be February 15. The office will remain open until 8:00 p.m. on February 15.
Anyone interested in obtaining an absentee ballot, please call the Town Clerk’s Office at 569-5504. Application deadline is March 5 at 12:00 p.m. All absentee ballots will need to be received at the Town Hall no later than 8:00 p.m. on March 6.

WRC presentation on United Nation Agenda 21
WESTFIELD –Westfield Republican City Committee chairman Daniel J. Allie, 38 Union Street, announced that the city committee will host a presentation on Agenda 21 February 23, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at the Westfield Boys & Girls Club. The event is free and open to the public.
The presentation is given by Dave Kopacz of Ware, President of the Massachusetts Republican Assembly and a member of the Conservation Commission and Open Space Committee.
 

Rep. Humason seeks legislative interns
WESTFIELD – Don Humason, Jr., Westfield’s State Representative, is seeking interns who are interested in working in his Westfield District office or State House office.
An ideal intern is generally a college student who will receive college credit for a structured internship experience. Retired individuals may also find the work interesting. Positions are available immediately.  Preference will be given to individuals from Westfield.
“I make sure that interns are actively involved in nearly every aspect of running the office; from researching legislation to tracking bills to reading newspaper articles to answering constituent correspondence,” Humason said.  “Interns will work side-by-side with me and my Chief of Staff, Maura Cassin.”
The positions are unpaid and non-partisan. There are no party requirements. A resume, references, or writing sample may be required.
“The hours are flexible and the work is varied, interesting, and often rewarding,” Humason added.  “If you or someone you know is interested, please contact me at my district office.”
