SOUTHWICK – The Southwick Department of Public Works is continuing its work to locate and repair potholes that are appearing in streets throughout the town. Unusual weather conditions earlier this week, with two-consecutive days of temperatures rising past 60 degrees, followed by days of 40 degrees or under have contributed to the problem.
These extreme changes in temperatures in just a span of 24 hours have been a major cause of potholes forming in town and throughout Western Massachusetts public works officials have said.
A few weeks ago, DPW Director Randy Brown told the Westfield News that Southwick crews were fixing potholes using both a cold and hot patch mixture.
Repair work can already be seen in locations such as the Feeding Hills Road area where the DPW has put patches on parts of the road that most desperately needed it with plans underway for the rest of the roads and streets.
“We’re just getting to them as quick as we can,” said Brown.
Brown agreed that freezing rain and unpredictable New England weather conditions are a key factor in the appearance of potholes and is making the repairs a main priority for his workers.
“That’s our focus this time of year,” said Brown.
