SOUTHWICK – Southwick High School student-athletes worked furiously to get into shape in the sweltering heat Friday with just 12 days left before opening day.
Players for the boys’ and girls’ soccer teams, field hockey, girls’ volleyball, and cross country vied for starting roles as coaches ratcheted up the intensity level.
Opening day, Tuesday, Sept. 6 figures to be just as intense with local teams seeking to get off to a blazing fast start.

The Southwick boys’ soccer team travels to Belchertown to take on the Orioles and the Rams’ field hockey team plays at Frontier. Both contests begin at 4 p.m.
Fans looking to stay close to home need only look to Stanley Park in Westfield where Southwick and St. Mary will collide in a track and field meet. Start time is shortly after 3:45 p.m.
On Wednesday, Sept. 7, the Southwick golf team will make its season debut at home against Palmer. Tee time at Edgewood Country Club is 3 p.m.
Girls’ soccer kicks off at Agawam at School Street Park at 4 p.m. Girls’ volleyball host Renaissance at 5 p.m.
