Please be advised that Governor Deval L. Patrick has ordered that the United States flag and the Commonwealth flag be lowered to half-staff at all state buildings from sunrise until sunset on Wednesday, October 22, 2014, in honor of SPC 4 Nicholas A. Outhuse, 26, U.S. Army, of Palmer, who died on October 10, 2014. This gubernatorial order applies to: 1. The main or administration building of each public institution of the Commonwealth, e.g. town and city halls. 2. Other state-owned or state-controlled buildings. 3. All state military installations.
At the top of the hill on Drugstore Hill there is a rotary with a large planter in the center. I notice that quite a few of the building blocks that were used in its construction have been pulled from the planter and are laying on the ground. Do you have any idea as to what happened to the planter and will it be repaired? Thank you. According to city officials, The rotary was struck twice by vehicles, one was a hit and run but in the other there is an accident report and the city will be repairing the structure and billing the insurance company.
At last Thursday’s (10/16) City Council Meeting, I was impressed by the young woman named Alina who spoke during Public Participation. She said she is a student at Holyoke Community College in the Sustainability Program and a newly registered Westfield voter. Kudos to her. She invited the Councilors and the public to attend a showing of the documentary “Tapped”. It was so inspiring to hear her share her concern for the environment. She explained the film will be about the manufacturing of bottled water and how plastic bottles impact our environment. I believe we all have a responsibility to learn about how our actions affect the environment and work on ways to protect our city’s precious resources. I hope residents of the city will plan to attend this free showing and the discussion following the film on Tuesday, October 28th at 6 pm in the Westfield Athenaeum’s Lang Auditorium.
