What is the policy of the Westfield Police regarding a dog left in a hot car? I was told at a local shop when reporting a dog in a car a few weeks ago that the police don’t do anything. Can you get some confirmation from the police? Perhaps Westfield needs to adopt the ordinance Southwick is discussing regarding dogs left in cars.  Thank you.  Westfield police normally, subject to officer availability, respond to complaints.  If an animal control officer is working, an ACO may also respond.  If a dog is found to be in distress, action, up to forcible entry of a vehicle, may result, and offenders cited.

Kudos goes out to Dan Puza and his staff at North Elm Butcher Block. Earlier this month, Dan catered a celebration meal after the 95th Installation of Officers at American Legion Post 124. The ham was absolutely delicious. I would highly recommend Dan for any catering event.

The residents of Overlook Drive try to maintain the pleasant appearance of our neighborhood and Western Avenue by usually placing seasonal decorations on our street entrance light pillars. These decorations also included ribbons in remembrance of Officer Torres and bunting for some special occasions, such as the July 4th or Memorial Day. This past Thursday two Bittersweet wreaths were attached to the posts for the fall season as autumn decorations. Some member (?) of the community apparently liked them very much and decided to appropriate them as their own late Friday night or very early Saturday morning. I will point out that these wreaths were the handiwork of homeowners in our neighborhood and not purchased ornaments. I should also point out that the plant material with the attractive red leaves and berries as part of these wreaths is a local plant with a common name of Poison Ivy. Not to worry, the rash and irritation should be gone in a week to ten days. I trust that you will enjoy these wreaths as much as we and our neighbors did for the short time that they were on display at the end of our street.

Manners. Do you remember them? I’m a senior in my mid-60’s and I remember them. I go into a restaurant to eat, a theater to watch a movie or any public building, and I take my hat off. I open the door for my wife. I say “please” and “thank you.” I’m courteous. I’m very surprised at all the seniors my age and older that have forgotten their manners. They’ll sit in a restaurant eating with their hats on. They go to the theater or a concert and they sit there with their hats on. It can’t be that everyone has Alzheimer’s. Come on, seniors! Make your mother and father proud of you and remember what manners are.

Hi. How you doing? I know it wasn’t too long ago when they were talking about road repairs, Union Street as a good example, and what a poor job of patching was done and all the contractors that are liable. Well, here we go again. Right at the intersection of 10/202 on North Road going towards Wyben, they dug it up and there’s a two foot wide patch a couple hundred yards long and right after they finished it’s already four or five inches shallow from the road. There’s one road that the contractors should have to go back and fix. Let’s see if Westfield is going to stand up to their ruling that they were going to make contractors liable. That’s just a horrific job already. I’d like to see something done about that. And, if you could, inform us again as to what was in the paper about the hearing and how it turned it out and if the contractors are liable to fix the roads. If you could look that up for me, I’d appreciate it. Thank you.

To “I must say I love the chatter about a dog park…” If you don’t have a dog and won’t be showing up there, why do you care if dogs are pooping and peeing in there?? And if you have a dog, yours will be doing the same thing ! Dogs will be dogs ! My dog does her business in our back yard, but when she goes for a walk, she pees again and again when she catches the scent of all the other dogs that have walked by. Sorry we can’t pick up the pee, but yes we do have to pick up the poop. And we do have to pick it up off the tree belt, because who takes care of the tree belt ? The homeowners ! We have to walk across it and mow it. Did you ever have your kids track poop through your house when someone else’s dog went on your lawn and didn’t pick it up ? Not fun !!
