Pulseline

PulseLine, January 24, 2013

Since the tragedy in Newtown, CT in December we have received many submissions revolving around guns, their ownership and ways of controlling them. Virtually all of these PulseLine submissions are not hinged on local aspects of the issue but more nationally based comments. Astute readers of this space will know that we normally do not allow non-local issues to be voiced here but since the issue of guns does have a local impact we have allowed these comments. Our policy still remains that the PulseLine is to voice concerns about local issues and we will continue to only allow what we consider locally based issues space in this feature of the paper.

Yes, I’d like to just say something to Mr. Alie, who wrote the letter to the editor in the Monday edition of the News. Please get your fact straight, Mr. Alie. The Fast and Furiuos gun problem was trying to be dumped on Eric Holder and that was proven to be… nothing happend with that because it was all Mr. Bush’s problem. They, a Republican administration, were the ones that initiated that and Mr. Holder knew nothing public until later in his office. Number two: why are you so against President Obama? What does he do so bad that he’s got blood on his hands? I’m glad you’re not in the Democrtic Party. You don’t belong there because you’re the one that is lying. The President doesn’t want to take guns away from anybody because anybody that thinks that is stupid. Number two: he wants to take clips away, more than 10 shots. People want 300. They want to buy as much ammunition. They want to buy 2,000 guns. This is ridiculous. He want to ban assault weapons, which were done before in 1994. He does not wish to take guns away from anybody. He wants background checks on everyone, including at the gun shows. Now, if this is too much for you to handle, I’m sorry, Mr. Alie. You are just like the rest of those people. You don’t believe in anything that anybody says. Rush Limbaugh and people like that. And I’m certainly glad you’re in another party. Thank you.

In the letter to the editor in the January 21 edition of the Westfield news the author addresses the issues of guns and Sandyhook among other things. He says and I quote he ‘detests intellectual dishonesty’. However his letter is filled with factual errors. For example he states that Adam Lanza did not use a Bushmaster rifle in the Sandyhook Massacre. Right wing talking points to the contrary the fact is Adam Lanza used a handgun to take his own life but he relied on the Bushmaster AR 15 to kill most of the victims. Connecticut State police Lieut. Paul Vance was quoted as follows: ‘The primary weapon used in the attack was a bushmaster A.R. 15 assault type weapon’. The author also says the Bushmaster is not comparable to an M 16 assault rifle because it is a ‘small caliber’ rifle. In fact the Bushmaster is the civilian semi automatic version of the M-16 and they fire identical rounds: .223 cal (5.56 + 45 mm). They are the same weapon firing the same rounds – the only difference is semiautomatic versus full auto. I really was in the military. When a letter is as factually flawed on such a serious topic the Westfield News has an obligation to make corrections. That said it’s a great paper keep up the good work!

Good afternoon, what I would like to know is why all the politicians want to take guns away from our legal people? Take a good long look at the drug dealers and the mentally ill and the ones that make these awful violent movies and games. That idiot in Connecticut – he killed his mother, stole her guns and now you people are pointing fingers at everyone that has a legal gun. I think it’s time you started to look over and see what’s going on. How many legal people that have legal guns do you catch doing something? And how many of these shootings in Springfield are drug-related? I think it’s about time we opened up our mental hospitals and alcohol institutions. We’ve got so many alcoholics around this state, it’s pitiful. They lay on the street drunk. Something’s got to be done about that – nobody wants to even go downtown. And you people have a lot of cleaning up to do before you blame the sportsmen. The insurance is stupid – just more money for someone to get rich on the backs of the legal gun owners. You better wake up and smell the roses. Don’t be blaming the innocent people or the ones that take care of their guns and have them legal. Thank you. Good-bye.

Yes, this is in Saturday’s 11/19/13 Westfield News paper Council rejects gun safety resolution: This is just another possible gun law shot down by the gun nuts. It’s against their right to bear arms and so forth. Well, I for one am sick and tired of these people who say “you cannot outlaw any type of guns, we can have thousands of guns, hundreds of thousands of rounds of ammunition, and we don’t have to report it to anybody. It’s our business. We’re in a free society.” Well, I suppose when I buy a car, you can’t make me buy insurance, you can’t make me register it, because it’s my right to own what I want to own. It’s none of your business. And when I sell it, it’s not your business who I sell it to, and how much money I get for it and I don’t have to register it, because it’s against my rights. That makes as much sense as you people with the guns. You got to just wake up. See what’s going on. Just the mention of any type of gun regulation at all you people go whacko. Well, I am really sick of hearing that. so give us a break and grow up and let’s have safety in our guns.

Councilor Sweeney, If you have an issue with the people’s right to keep and bear arms, I suggest you submit a resolution to repeal the 2nd Amendment. The resolution you proposed in the 1/16 edition of the News is not only laughably ineffective, it’s also unconstitutional.

In addressing the ridicule the press has heaped upon the NRA over the ad stating Obama was a hypocrite because his kids are protected by armed secret servicemen: Mr. Biden then went on to again say he didn’t want” rent-a cops” in schools. Rent a cops? Where is the outrage that our “heroes” of 911 are now being belittled by the #2 man in the administration as non-professionals? Where is the outrage in the press over that nasty slap in the face to our police? This just goes to show that the press IS the mouthpiece of the left, slanting stories and putting a spin on whatever to influence public opinion and further their own agendas. Recently,Ted Nugent was ridiculed for comparing those who refuse to obey the coming round of unconstitutional gun laws to Rosa Parks. I see his point exactly, if something you are ordered to do you find immoral, illegal, or just plain wrong, as an American, it is your duty to refuse… albeit non violently…. we see this in the acts and teachings of Martin Luther King himself! Protest non-violently by refusing to obey that which you feel is wrong. Period. As for Mr. Pinsky’s proposal to force the populace to get liability insurance on our firearms, he compares the fact you need liability insurance on cars, but not guns? Yes Mr. Pinsky, for you see, driving a car is a PRIVILEGE, owning a gun is a RIGHT… will i need liability insurance next if my free speech upsets someone? Where does it end once we blunder blindly down that road? Clearly, the left smells blood like a shark and is attempting a big push to finally end your rights by waving the proverbial bloody shirt and saying “for the children!” Propaganda in the worst degree, Goebbels would be proud of you! I hope everyone tunes in to the inauguration to see Mr. Obama “swear to uphold and defend the constitution of the United States” while he is attempting to wipe out the second amendment thereof. Maybe then, everyone will see just what a hypocrite he really is.

The person who wrote about having the flu (dated Jan. 17) as soon as getting a flu shot and is wondering if anyone else went through the experience or is this person the only one… I’ve heard of people getting the flu after receiving the flu shot and I’ve also I read that the flu shot takes up to two weeks to actually take effect and build up immunity in your body.   I’ve never had a flu shot in my life nor have my children.  So I can’t say whether the flu shot does give you the flu or not. If the flu shot does take two weeks to build up immunity in your body, then it might not help if someone has already been exposed and might get sick anyways within 3 to 5 days. I had the flu last year. (Remember, I never had a flu shot) I too felt fine one day, the next day I was in bed with the flu.  Hit me like a ton of bricks.  For two weeks. This year, my daughter has the flu. (Never had a flu shot either) She felt fine Monday. (Jan.14) Next day, she was in bed and has since been in bed with the flu. Hope this helps that person with their wondering.

Disclaimer. I am 50 years old. I find the whining of the uneducated and geriatric on the PulseLine to be hysterical entertainment. Thanks for bringing back phone call contributions. The 2010 US census found that 74.2 percent of all Americans had Internet access at home. I would venture to guess that every reader of the Westfield News is in easy driving distance of a public library with access to the web, if they don’t have it at home, and a friendly librarian willing to teach them how to send an email.

Yes, PulseLine I was reading The PulseLine, I forget what day it was, but there was somebody in there talking about taxing booze to raise money instead of upping the income tax. Well, the voters of Massachusetts decided to vote against taxing booze.

While I appreciate the fact that both Rep.’s Knapik and Humason stated working class families cannot take another hit, where were they when taxes in Westfield went up again. I agree enough is enough. Start truly representing the working, middle class people because we are going down hill fast. I am so sick of the political bull. I really believe if Patrick was a republican, neither Knapik nor Humason would have said a word against the new tax. Maybe I missed any remarks by either Senator objecting to the raise in property taxes in Westfield. Doubt it. Our government needs to stop spending! Start monitoring where our hard earned money goes! I am tired of supporting the so-called poor in Massachusetts. I am sure there are people in need, but we need to track them and make sure the need is legitimate I’ve seen the scam, have a baby but don’t marry or live together so you can get food stamps and other perks. The seniors and working middle class need the help too. Help Us All! – Born in the USA

Where have all the Blue Jays gone – long time passing. I haven’t seen not a one all winter, and they were usually the first ones to gather up the bird seed and bread that was thrown on the ground for all the birds to eat. My friends in West Springfield also report the same. Any thoughts on this from you readers out there? Thank you.

Good afternoon PulseLine, could you please tell me happened about the story you were doing on the school bus drivers? There was an incident on January 10th of 2013, on Western Avenue involving a school bus driver hitting a pedestrian on Western Avenue. The person was sent to the hospital for a few days and the driver went back to work the next day. Were they drug and alcohol tested? Why were they allowed to go back to work? I would like to know the answer to these questions please. Would you look into this? Thank you and have a good afternoon.  A 17 year old male was horsing around and jumped into the path of the oncoming bus resulting in the bus operator having no time to avoid hitting the boy. The youth admitted to Westfield police that he was goofing around. His story matched that of the bus operator and based on the information gathered there was no need to do anything further.

Hi!  You answered my question on confidentiality of the names of the people who call in or email into The PulseLine by saying they never get printed in the paper.  But how confidential are the names to the employees of The Westfield News? Who has access to the call waiting or caller ID? Is that public knowledge in your office? Thank you. Doesn’t everyone at the bank have access to your banking information, social security number and passwords? I think there are bigger concerns in the world than who at The Westfield News knows who e-mails or calls the PulseLine.
