Rams, Gators, Saints kick-start tourney runs

What do the St. Mary, Southwick, and Gateway high school soccer teams all have in common? All three schools’ boys’ and girls’ soccer teams have qualified for the postseason.
Yesterday, each learned its fate – all six teams will receive home games for their respective tournament openers.
The boys’ soccer tournament begins Saturday with No. 9 Palmer (9-3-6) at No. 8 Southwick (7-7-4), No. 9 St. Joe’s (10-7) at No. 8 Gateway (9-4-4), and No. 10 Lee (6-7-3) at No. 7 St. Mary (7-6-4). Times have not been announced.
Westfield Voc-Tech (12-4) was seeded third in the Division III tournament, and will receive a first-round bye.
On the girls’ side, No. 6 Gateway (10-4-2) hosts No. 11 Holyoke Catholic (7-7-4) and No. 10 Pathfinder (8-7-2) travels to the Whip City to take on No. 7 St. Mary (9-8-10). Westfield (9-6-3), which earned a seventh seed, hosts No. 10 Central (9-5-4). All three games are scheduled to be played Sunday. Times have yet to be determined.
Third-seeded Southwick (10-3-5) received a bye in the D2 tourney.

ALSO: On Friday, the sixth-seeded Westfield High School field hockey team travels to Northampton to take on the No. 3 Blue Devils. Westfield will attempt to avoid a season sweep with more obviously at stake this time around. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. …The cross-country championships will be held Saturday at Stanley Park. Teams from Westfield, Southwick, St. Mary, and Gateway will compete. The girls will begin at 3; the boys at 3:40. …On Monday, the Western Massachusetts Division 3 champion St. Mary Saints will compete in the state championship at Redtail Golf Club in Devens, Mass. There will be a 10 a.m. shotgun start. …The volleyball tournament fields will be announced Thursday. …The Westfield High School football team will travel to Springfield to take on Central Friday night in a special late kickoff at 8 p.m.
