Rawk Report: 25 Years of Carbon Leaf

Lead singer Barry Privett of Carbon Leaf at Mohegan Sun’s Wolf Den

UNCASVILLE, CT – My first introduction to Carbon Leaf was on the 2002 American Music Awards show.  Carbon Leaf won the New Music Award that year and performed on the show.  It was by chance I was watching and thank god I did.  It started a 15 year journey for me with traveling to countless shows, buying their CD’s and t-shirts and just enjoying everything Carbon Leaf produced.

The Wolf Den at Mohegan Sun welcomed the band Sunday night for a 7:00 show.  Bands for the Sunday night shows get a solid 90 minutes to perform their set.  Carbon Leaf didn’t waste a minute, actually ended early so they added a song to the set…much to the fans delight.  By the way this was by far the best crowd for a Sunday night Wolf Den show that I have seen.

The band opened with Come Sunday Morn and quickly followed it with Bow & Arrow.  The set really picked up when they introduced the opening notes of What About Everything?  Carbon Leaf has a solid catalog of releases with well over 10 full length albums under their belt including a just released EP, The Gathering: Volume 1.

Carbon Leaf tore through an 18 song set and had the crowd dancing and singing to almost all the songs.  Some other highlight songs of the night were, Desperations Song, X-Ray, The Boxer and The Donnybrook Affair.

After a brief break, the band came back out for a two song encore of a new song, Gathering which was followed by Let Your Troubles Role By.  Once finished with the last song, the band realized that they still had five minutes left and decided to add one more tune.  They decided on the Scottish Folk song Mary Mac, much to the delight of the diehard Carbon Leaf fans.  This has been a staple of their live shows for year.  What a classic way to end the set.

Carbon Leaf has paid their musical dues and truly deserves a bigger audience.  They are well worth the effort to go see live and will be performing a few shows in Massachusetts and Connecticut come November.  Go check them out!
