SOUTHWICK – Raymond “Ray” Douglas Fox, 80, (1946-2026) of Southwick, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 30th, 2026, surrounded by 
his loving family and friends, just one day after celebrating his 80th birthday. True to form, Ray waited until the candles were out before making his exit.
Born in Westfield, Massachusetts, Ray was the eldest son of the late Douglas and Margaret (Stone) Fox. He grew up on the family farm in Southwick, where he developed a lifelong love for the land, a deep passion for farming, and pure joy in driving his tractor. Those roots stayed with him always. He graduated from Southwick High School in 1964 and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Springfield College in 1968. Later in life, his passion for learning led him to Westfield State University, where he pursued graduate studies toward a master’s degree in education. Following college, Ray enlisted in the United States Air Force and served four years, including a year in Vietnam stationed at Da Nang. After his active-duty service, he continued with the Air National Guard, working at Barnes Air National Guard Base. He retired after a distinguished career spanning more than 20 years of military service. Ray then enjoyed a long and fulfilling career with the United States Postal Service, retiring as a highly respected supervisor in Holyoke, Massachusetts, where he formed many dear and lifelong friendships. He also served as president of Fox Brothers Inc., doing business as Fox Farms–Southwick Florist. Ray was never one to sit still. Retirement didn’t slow him down, he continued working as a school bus driver for Lecrenski Brothers Inc. A charter member of the Southwick Rotary Club, Ray devoted more than 40 years to the organization, serving in various leadership roles, including multiple terms as president, and was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow. He lived by the Rotary motto “Service Above Self,” volunteering countless hours for community events and supporting many charities quietly and without seeking recognition. A true altruist.
Ray was the husband of the late Mary Ann Niedzielski. He will be deeply missed by his brothers, Robert and Russell, both of Southwick, Massachusetts. He was predeceased by his brother Ronald. He leaves behind his nieces and nephews, who will always remember Uncle Ray with great love and affection.
The family would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the VA, Hospice, and all of Ray’s caregivers who cared for him with such compassion, patience, and kindness. During a very difficult time, you not only cared for Ray, but also gave comfort, reassurance, and support to our family. We will always be grateful for the gentle way you treated Ray, the dignity you gave him, and the many ways you helped make his final days more peaceful. Your care meant more to our family than words can say.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, September 10th, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Southwick Forastiere Funeral & Cremation, 624 College Highway, Southwick, MA. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, September 11th, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be private.
