Representative Velis’ weekly update

Good morning Westfield. I would like to begin this week’s update by expressing my shock and condolence about the recent events in Orlando. Tragedies like these are devastating. Human life is so precious and any loss of life shocks the consciousness. I extend my condolences to anyone affected by what happened in Orlando.

On a lighter note, during this week’s session the House passed the bill updating municipal laws in Massachusetts. This bill was aimed at modernizing the state regulations that affect cities and towns. Provisions of this bill allow more authority to local officials and municipalities regarding bidding processes, approval of borrowing, denying permits to delinquent taxpayers, and eliminating duplicative reporting requirements relating to debt. The bill passed unanimously in the House and will now be moved on to the Senate for their vote.

I would like to take a minute to remind everyone of an event coming up here in Westfield. On on June 25th Westfield will be having a 5K to benefit Lift For The 22. Lift for the 22 provides gym memberships to returning veterans in hopes of providing them with a healthy and constructive outlet.

This is a subject that is very close to me. Each day in the United States 22 Veterans commit suicide. These men and women have sacrificed so much for our country and deserve as much support as possible when they return home. Losing one veteran (or any person for that matter) a day to suicide is indefensible. We as a nation can and MUST do better for our men and women in uniform. They have already given so much for our country.

That being said, I would love to see as many of you come out to this event as possible! It doesn’t matter if you run, walk, or crawl your way across the finish line. The run begins at 10 a.m. at The Elks Lodge and registration is open online.

That’s all for this week. Enjoy the rest of your weekend Westfield!. As always, please feel free to contact me with your questions, issues, or concerns at [email protected] or at my district office phone number, 413-572-3920.
