Robert Leavitt

flagWESTFIELD-Robert E. Leavitt, 90, passed away Monday, January 12, 2015 at Baystate Medical Center. He was born in Providence, R.I. on March 6, 1924 to the late Ralph and Cecelia (Smith) Leavitt and was a graduate of Attleboro High School, after which he graduated from flight aviation school at Wright Patterson AFB in Dayton, OH. Robert served his country during WWII, with the United States Navy from 1943-1952 serving in the Asiatic So. Pacific Theater in the 5th and 7th fleet and the Mediterranean 6th fleet.  He also served in the civil service with the United States Air Force from 1952-1984 as an aircraft repair engineer. He retired as a Senior Master Sergeant in the Air Force Reserves serving much of his time at Westover AFB, in Chicopee, MA. Robert was a paid for life member of the American Legion Post 454 of Westfield. He was an avid New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox fan; he also enjoyed reading and watching old war movies and sharing his war stories with family and friends. Robert was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He will always be loved and greatly missed by his family. Robert was predeceased by his son Jeffrey B. Leavitt, his daughter-in-law, Debbie Leavitt and his brother William Leavitt and is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Hilda Y. (Beauregard) Leavitt, his loving children, Christine A. Leavitt of Westfield, Michael R. Leavitt of Colorado Springs, CO, Lynn Y. Woods and her husband, Mike of Portland, ME and Carol M. Meserve and her husband Steve of Sharon, MA, his six cherished grandchildren, Michael J. Leavitt, Jennifer Leavitt, Allyson Woods, Nathan Meserve, Adam Meserve and Matthew Meserve, and his great grandson, Devin. Robert’s funeral service will be held on Jan 16, Friday, at 11a.m. in the Firtion Adams Funeral Service, 76 Broad St. Westfield, followed by burial with Military Honors in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Westfield. Visiting hours will be held on Jan 15, Thursday from 4-7 PM at the funeral home.
