WESTFIELD- Rocky’s Ace Hardware is accepting donations for the Westfield Animal Shelter now through Dec. 23 for its 9th Annual Pet Food and Supplies Drive.

The Westfield location of the regional hardware chain has already begun accepting donations of pet food, toys, cleaning supplies, litter, and other pet necessities.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals calculates that there are roughly 6.5 million animals that enter shelters across the country every year. Of those animals, about 4 million end up being adopted, leaving many of them in shelters long term, if it’s offered.

“When we think about giving to those in need, it’s important to think about our furry friends, too,” said Rocco Falcone, president of Rocky’s. “The holiday season is a perfect time to help provide necessities for these animals, so they can stay safe and healthy until they can find a caring home of their own.”

Assistant Manager of the Westfield Rocky’s location Kathleen Chrzanowski said that their location received $450 in cash donations total over the course of last year’s drive in addition to donations of supplies.

“We also encourage people to donate supplies they may not have thought of, like paper and supplies for the actual office of the shelter,” said Chrzanowski.

Some animal shelters provided a wish list of sorts for supplies they are in need of. The Westfield Animal Shelter at 178 Apremont Way can house dozens of cats and kittens at a time as well as large dogs, meaning some of the supplies can be used up quickly. They are specifically seeking all kinds of pet food, treats and toys, food and water bowls, cleaning supplies, and office supplies.

The shelter also houses pets that appear to be lost from their owners, so residents who have pets with a tendency to escape the yard may find them later at the shelter.
