SPRINGFIELD – It was an all-star performance featuring several sparkling moments from the Westfield High School swim team at the Western Massachusetts Division 1 swim championships in the waters of Springfield College where one Bomber proved to be a triple threat.
Tommy Russell shined brightest, winning three events – the 50 freestyle (21.68), the 100 backstroke (52.08), and the 200 medley relay (with teammates Patrick Lurgio, Jack Beaulieu, and Matt Morash; 1:39.98).
“They got us off to a great, great start,” Westfield High swim coach Tom Lewis said of the 200 medley relay crew. “We had a great meet – a lot of best times and a lot of very fast swimming.”
Westfield placed fourth (213 points) with strong efforts from Cole Viamari (200 freestyle/9th/1:53.90; 500 free/9th/5:16.23), Morash (200 individual medley/5th/2:07.12; 100 free/6th/51.12), Lurgio (200 IM/6th/2:07.52; 100 breaststroke/9th/1:06.41), Beaulieu (50 free/10th/23.81; 100 butterfly/5th/58.75), the 400 free relay team of Russell, Morash, Lurgio, and Viamari (4th, 3:24.29) and the 200 free relay team (13th, 1:38.15).
