Saints roll on…

WESTFIELD – The St. Mary High School boys’ soccer team is, for lack of a better word, rolling. And rolling along quite nicely.
St. Mary’s followed up a win over Westfield Voc-Tech this past week with a 1-1 tie against Ware on Friday. The Saints, who have bounced back from an 0-2 start to the season, rallied to tie the Indians at Westfield North Middle School.
“It was a good, hard fought win,” said St. Mary’s coach Andrew Martin.
Although it was an own goal from Ware in the second half, the Saints’ strong-armed goalkeeper Bryce Kibbe corralled 11 saves to keep his team close every step of the way.
Ware struck for its goal in the first half on a shot from Eli Goudreau. Leon Gaumond assisted on the play. The Indians controlled the tempo of the half, but St. Mary’s turned it around in the second.
“Unfortunately, neither team could capitalize on any of the chances by the offense,” Martin said.
St. Mary’s will next host powerhouse Cathedral on Wednesday, a true test for the Saints.
