SOUTHWICK – Southwick-Tolland-Granville Regional Schools Curriculum Director Maureen Wilson is working on updating the Youth At-Risk data for the district.
Superintendent John Barry and Wilson told the regional school committee this week that the state needs “fresh data” and they will issue surveys to students in grades seven, nine and 10.
The anonymous surveys will include questions on drug and alcohol use, sexual activity, eating habits, physical activity, and more.
“I spoke with Officer (Daniel) Ryan who is giving me a new list of street names for drugs to include in the survey,” said Wilson.
Barry stressed that the surveys are anonymous.
“These are not done with students names,” he said.
The committee noted that there were no questions about e-cigarettes in the questionnaire. Wilson said she planned to include them when she updates the survey.
Wilson and Barry also addressed an update to next year’s professional development schedule. Barry said programs have been somewhat inconsistent and there have been many new staff hired in recent years and they want to streamline professional development for all staff.
“The whole year is planned on data and our perceptions of what we need to do,” said Wilson.
Barry said they are carefully choosing topics and presenters.
“The effectiveness has a lot to do with the quality of the program,” said Barry.
