SOUTHWICK – The Select Board held a work session on Monday evening to discuss a few topics. Chairman Russ Fox indicated at the start of the meeting that no decisions would be made, just discussions about the specific topics.

To start off the session, there was quick talk about what to do with the old library, that is located almost directly across from the Southwick Town Hall.

The Select Board looked over the report from the firm, Tighe & Bond. It is reported that the asbestos in the old library would cost $15,000, but the Select Board confirmed the asbestos is not an overwhelming issue.

Along with Fox, Select Board members Joseph Deedy and Doug Moglin all agreed that looking for appraisals and finding someone to take over the building and bring it back to compliance might be a smart choice moving forward.

As the Historical Commission, is involved with this project, the Select Board concluded that they will check with the Historical Commission and ask them for a recommendation.

The next topic of discussion involved a rather hot button issue; the potential of a medical marijuana retail store in town.

The Select Board quickly confirmed that the medical marijuana proposal made by Healthwise Foundation, met the bylaws of the Planning Board.

Before any decisions can be made about the proposal, the Select Board unanimously agreed that the public needs more exposure to this proposal.

Fox then suggested that they hold a public hearing in the near future and let the members of Healthwise Foundation share their proposal to the community of Southwick.

“We want to give people the chance to hear the proposal,” said Fox.

It has not been determined when the public hearing will occur, as the Select Board is going to work on scheduling it.
