SOUTHWICK – The town’s Select Board is coordinating an introductory meeting for the creation of a 250th anniversary committee. Select Board Administrative Assistant Cindy Pendleton is will be setting up a meeting time during the week of June 18, with the meeting expected to be at the Southwick Town Hall.
The town of Southwick was incorporated as a separate community on November 7, 1770 and in April of this year the Select Board announced that they were looking to form a committee to work on the 250th anniversary project slated for 2020.
The meeting the week of June 18 will allow all interested residents in town to attend. Select Board Clerk Russ Fox, who is helping form this committee, pointed out that he will be sending out letters to a number of civic organizations in town to see if they have any interest in helping.
Fox said that the hope is to have a member of the Park and Recreation Commission, the school district, police and fire departments, as well as the historical commission, churches, and any other interested parties on the committee.
The Select Board is encouraging anyone to come out and be a part of the first meeting.
“We’d like people just to attend even if they don’t think they want to be an official member of the committee,” said Fox. “We can always use workers.”
The Southwick Civic Fund, a non-profit organization that hosts events to raise money for the community, has already committed to assisting the committee in this process.
The responsibility of the committee will consist of trying to come up with a number of different events throughout the year of 2020 that can be a part of celebrating the town’s 250th anniversary.
After speaking with individuals in Westfield who have been working on their 350th anniversary in 2019, Fox likes some of the ideas they have come up with.
“Westfield, I thought had some good ideas that we could have on a smaller scale in Southwick,” said Fox.
The actual date and time of the meeting will be announced once that information is released by the Select Board office.
