WESTFIELD – The Special Education Parent Advisory Council (SEPAC) is offering a workshop entitled, “Planning a Bright Future for Your Child,” on Thursday, Nov. 8, 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Westfield Technical Academy Cafeteria. Child care will be provided.
Sherry Elander, Transition Specialist for the East Mt. Transition Program will focus on how “teamwork makes the dream work.”
The East Mt. Transition program provides transition service, guidance and support for students with intellectual disabilities and their families. The program focuses on self-determination, travel skills, and safety awareness. The students are also able to spend time with young people their own age.
Students can also participate in programs at Holyoke Community College and at Westfield State University through the Inclusive Concurrent Enrollment (ICE) program, which provides dual enrollment opportunities for transition students. Students have the opportunity to take college courses, for credit or audit, with supports determined through their individual education plans.
“It is never early enough for parents to start planning for the transition process to post graduation, whether it be secondary education, technical college or the work environment,” said Michele Douglas, parent volunteer for SEPAC.
