Shake Off the Winter!

Tina Gorman , Director, Westfield Council On Aging

New England winters can be long, cold, bleak, and seemingly, never-ending. But we are a hearty lot, particularly those older adults who have braved the snow year after year, decade after decade. Of course, it is much easier to suffer through snowstorms, ice, and wind when there is an event to look forward to beyond the drudgery of January and February. Toward that end, last year the Friends of the Westfield Senior Center planned a “Shake Off the Winter Party” for early March. The event was so successful, that the group is bringing it back by popular demand.
Are you ready for a night of fun, music, and prizes? The Friends of the Westfield Senior Center invite you to attend the group’s second annual “Shake Off the Winter Party” to be held on Saturday, March 2 from 7 to 10 p.m. at Shaker Farms Country Club. Hors d’oeuvres will be served and entertainment will be provided by Westfield’s own Cory & the Knightsmen. Raffle tickets will be sold for prizes including gift certificates to local businesses and restaurants, gift baskets, sports items, a handmade afghan, and more. The Grand Raffle Prizes include a lottery ticket Irish Bouquet, $100 cash, and a round of golf for four at Shaker Farms Country Club. Event tickets are $20 and may be purchased at Keenan Law Offices, 48 Elm Street, the Westfield Council On Aging office, 40 Main Street, as well as at the door. Proceeds from this fundraiser will go toward furnishing the new Senior Center. The event is sponsored by Firtion-Adams Funeral Services with Grand Raffle Prize donations from Yankee Mattress Factory, Keenan Law Offices, and Shaker Farms Country Club.
The Friends group was formed last year to provide enhancements to the programs and activities of the Westfield Senior Center through fundraising, advocacy, and facility improvement. The initial goal of the group is to raise $500,000 to furnish the new Senior Center. Phase II of that project is well underway. As we await a decision by the Probate Court regarding the use of the property on Noble Street for the building site, the architects, the owner’s project management group, and members of the new Senior Center Building Committee have begun the preliminary planning of the types, sizes, and functions of individual rooms and offices for the new Center. So gather your family, friends, co-workers, and neighbors and join Friends Board members Tom Humphrey, Bill Tatro, Ginny Hebert, Attorney Tom Keenan, Sue Szenda, and Kevin Moloney as together we eat, party, sing, dance, win prizes, and “shake off the winter.”
