Siegfried Bruno Hoppe

CHESTER – Siegfried Bruno Hoppe, age 85, of Chester, died on Tuesday, March 5th, 2024 at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield after a brief illness. He was born in Weizbaum, Germany on December 29th, 1938 and he was the son of the late Ida (Macht) Hoppe and Paul Hoppe.

He was educated in Germany and moved to this country in his early twenties and resided in Westfield with his brother Hilmar. Soon after coming to America, Siegfried became a naturalized citizen of the United States of America. He became a hill town resident, residing in many of its towns before settling in Chester. He was employed for many years until his retirement from International Paper in Westfield and formerly at the Strathmore Paper Mill in Woronoco. For many years he worked at the Becket Transfer Station.

Siegfried was very civically minded, and he was involved in many local organizations, the Highland Valley Elder Care Meals on Wheels Program, Huntington Southern Hilltown Council of Aging, Pomona Huntington Grange, Huntington Lion’s Club and a member of the Becket Center Church. He loved tending to his home projects of lawncare, flower gardens and his collection of garden gnomes.

He will be deeply missed by his entire loving family, his daughters; Karen M. Hoiberg and partner, Jason Slack of Westfield, Heidi J. Kellogg and husband, Harry Kellogg, Jr. of Huntington, son; John R. Hoppe and wife, Laurie Hoppe of Russell, longtime partner, Patricia A. Mitchell of Becket, sixteen beloved grandchildren and twenty one cherished great-grandchildren, his brother, Arno Hoppe of Australia, sister-in-law, Bobbie Hoppe of Westfield along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends both here and abroad.

Siegfried was predeceased by his devoted wife of fifty-four years, Ellen Dale (Gamache) Hoppe in March of 2015, a son; Paul Hoppe in May of 2000, brothers; Hilmar Hoppe, Horst Hoppe, Armin Hoppe, sisters; Edith Igel and husband Heinz, Lisa Schauerhammer and husband Gunter.

Calling Hours for Siegfried will be held on Saturday, March 16th from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Graham Hilltown Community Funeral Home, 27 Russell Road in Huntington, whom has honorably been entrusted with Siegfried’s care and services. A private graveside service will be held in the spring at Norwich Bridge Cemetery in Huntington.

Memorial donations in Siegfried’s name are requested in lieu of flowers to the Shriners Children’s Hospital New England, 516 Carew Street, Springfield, MA 01104
