DEERFIELD – At their fall term athletic banquet, Deerfield Academy named Billy Smith (WHS ’12 grad) as a co-MVP of its varsity football team.
Smith was rewarded for his versatility. From the slot receiver position, he led the Big Green in receptions with 24, including two fourth down touchdowns. He also filled in at wingback where he ran for two TDs, and played two games at quarterback, throwing for two scores and running for one. Smith played all season at cornerback and led the team in interceptions with four, and had one touchdown on defense. He also returned punts and kickoffs for Deerfield.
Several of Smith’s teammates will be playing Division I sports next year, including Greg Froelich who signed with Michigan as a lineman, and John Dillon as a tight end with Holy Cross. Defensive back, Liam Kennedy recently signed with Notre Dame as a lacrosse player. Jackson Finnigan and Alec Webster will be playing lacrosse at Delaware, and Virginia respectively, and Ray Horgan will be taking his lacrosse talents to Army. Quarterback Damien Vega will be playing football and lacrosse at Division III Wesleyan next year. Deerfield plays in the Class A New England Prep School League.
