Southwick board approves police training

Police Chief Mark J. Krynicki has been approved to attend the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Training Conference this year.
The conference is hosted in San Diego, CA, from Sept. 29 – Oct.2.
Krynicki hasn’t made any definite travel plans yet, but said he looks forward to the training.
“We have to train so many hours a year,” he said. “It is how we keep proficient at what we do.”
This training costs roughly between $1,000-$2,000 to attend, depending on costs of flights, hotels, and other expenses.
The IACP training conference provides various training sessions in over 175 areas of expertise.
Police chiefs from across the United States will be in attendance to learn techniques in subjects such as legal updates, management, risk management, and tactical procedures.
This IACP conference is also the world’s leading vendor show, displaying new and innovative police equipment.
With over 800 vendors, everything from helicopters to handguns will be on exhibit.
Also, the Western Regional Homeland Security Advisory Council (WRHSAC) has approved a training request for the Southwick Police Department by awarding their agency with $3,500 in Homeland Security Grant Funds.
Two officers, who have not been chosen yet, will attend the three-day long Officer Down Rescue Training, hosted at the Swift River Gun Club in Belchertown.
Techniques and procedures will be taught on what to do if a fellow officer has been shot or wounded, including bleeding control techniques, medical care, bandaging and tourniquets, and vehicle rescue.
“After the officers lost already while on duty, everyone needs this,” Krynicki said.
The two officers who attend the Officer Down Rescue Training will come back to their department, train others, so everyone is knowledgeable.
