Southwick class of ’64 gives back to alma mater

SOUTHWICK – On Tuesday morning, the Southwick High School Class of 1964 Reunion Committee presented a $2,700 check to the Southwick Regional School.

The money is going towards the library in the regional school so there can be a “maker space” for the students. According to school librarian Beth Yanuskiwicz, a maker space is an area in the library where students can create their own projects and come up with unique ideas. Yanuskiwicz plans on using the money to buy laptops, have 3D printing, circuits, LED lights, and entrepreneurial tools.

“It was great to just have this opportunity pop up,” said Yanuskiwicz. “I think this is going to be a great thing.”

Southwick Regional School Principal Joe Turmel was informed about this from the reunion committee a few months ago and was excited at the idea.

“It’s a cross-over activity so it doesn’t just meet the need of a student in one area,” said Turmel. “Everyone is very excited about this opportunity.”

The members of the reunion committee spent several months brainstorming with Turmel to figure out what would be the best way to donate their money to the school and decided the maker space was the best idea.

“We just felt that it would have a benefit for the most students,” said Nancy Kaminski. “That’s the wave of the future.”

This whole idea stemmed from when the reunion committee hosted the class of 1964’s 50th reunion in 2014. Since then, the committee has been raising money to give back to their alma mater. The members of the reunion committee are Kaminski, Elaine Markel, Cynthia Lydiard, Jackie Jaros, Marie Bocasile, Georgi-Ann Thompson, and the late Jeanne Gaines.
