Southwick COA offering health fair for senior citizens

SOUTHWICK – The Council on Aging is hosting a health fair at the Senior Center on May 9 from 9 a.m. until Noon that is free and open to the public. According to Council on Aging Director Cindy Sullivan, they’ve held two previous health fairs in the town hall auditorium. This year, the health fair is right at the senior center in their activities room and dining area.

“We want to make it more accessible (for the seniors),” said Sullivan.

More than 50 vendors spanning a wide variety of businesses and organizations in the health industry are scheduled to be at the fair. Sullivan noted that some of those organizations include Mercy Hospital, AARP (American Association of Retired Persons), American Red Cross, the Alzheimer’s Association, and Holyoke Hospice. Other help like social security, financial advisers, and a massage therapist will also be included.

The different services available are expected to be a benefit for the seniors.

“It’s just to give them information about their health,” said Sullivan.

Providing an event where seniors can speak to health professionals in person is something Sullivan sees as great value.

“I think it’s always good for them to actually speak to people rather than just read a brochure,” said Sullivan. “To me, information is power, the more information they have, the better decisions they can make.”

It’s also noted that, due to the health fair, the senior center will be closed on May 9.
