SOUTHWICK – Over the last few weeks, communities throughout Western Massachusetts have experienced fluctuations of air temperatures. Just last week, temperatures were upwards of 50 degrees, and then just days later, mother nature brought temperatures of 30 degrees and colder.
While the change in temperature is yet another reminder that weather in New England can be unpredictable, it can also become a concern for drivers having to avoid a high number of potholes during their daily travels.
The issue isn’t only a concern for drivers as local public works departments have to address this problem when it arises in their town.
According to Southwick DPW Director Randy Brown, he’s seen more potholes this year than in recent years past.
“Most roads have been affected by pothole issues this year,” said Brown. “You just got to tackle them one at a time.”
Currently, Southwick DPW workers use a cold patch mixture, which is just a temporary fix to the pothole. Although, Brown noted that there is an asphalt plant in Chicopee that is set to open its doors in February allowing DPW’s to access hot patch which has better adhesive qualities and lasts longer.
“Hopefully we can get the pothole issue under control,” said Brown.
The Southwick DPW will continue to be working on potholes, working on the main roads in town first.
