SOUTHWICK – This Monday, residents have the opportunity to give one of the greatest gifts they can by donating blood.
The Southwick Fire Department is hosting its annual blood drive in conjunction with the Mercy Medical Center Blood Bank on Monday from 4-8 p.m. at the station at 15 Depot St.
Gina Duncan, blood donor recruiter, said historically Southwick residents have been generous donors.
“Southwick is one of our biggest supporters,” said Duncan. “Since the end of September, Southwick gave over 500 units of blood.”
According to Duncan, one unit of blood can save up to three lives.
“Southwick potentially saved 1,600 lives,” she added.
Duncan said Westfield blood drives have also brought in big numbers.
“Westfield has been great to us, too,” Duncan said. “We are extremely grateful to everyone who comes out to donate – it’s such a selfless act.”
Duncan said right now the Blood Bank’s supply of type O blood is low.
“There is a need for all types at all times, the low fluctuates and right now it’s O,” said Duncan.
Duncan said the Blood Bank is also open for donors four days a week. To register for the Southwick Blood Drive, call (413) 569-6363. walk-ins are welcome.
