Southwick home fire early Sunday morning

SOUTHWICK – A fire occurred at 71 Coes Hill Rd. around 3:30 a.m. on Sunday morning. The owners of the home said that they woke up to smoke and a problem with their wood stove.

Once firefighters responded, the home that was built in 1802 was completely engulfed in flames.

The home was completely destroyed and three firefighters were treated at the scene with minor injuries. The people living inside the house were able to get out safely and without any injuries.

According to Southwick Fire Chief Russ Anderson, the surrounding area of Coes Hill Rd. has no fire hydrants, so firefighters had to shuttle water from a mile away and the cold weather caused the water lines to be frozen.

Several surrounding fire departments were able to assist Southwick with tankers and manpower, including Granville, Suffield, Lost Acres, and East Hartland.
