Southwick Police notifying residents about recent reports of a scam

SOUTHWICK – There have been numerous reports from Southwick residents of a phone call scam in the past few days. According to the Southwick Police Department Facebook Page, a calling party would state that they are from Eversource, the town’s electric company.

The scam artists would state to the homeowners that their bill is to be paid immediately or their power will be shut off.

“This is certainly not the way Eversource conducts business,” said Southwick Police Sergeant Detective Robert Landis.

Landis wanted to make Southwick residents are aware that if you are behind on your bill, you will be notified by mail.

Further into the police department’s Facebook post, it tells the community how to find out if it is a scam or not by asking residents to either go into a phone directory or on a recent bill  for an actual Eversource phone number and call them so the status of their account can be confirmed.

Landis says that the phone numbers associated with the scam calls never stay the same as they are typically generated through a computer system.

From this past weekend, and through Tuesday, there have been between 10 to 15 reports of the scam from Southwick residents.

“We’re trying to educate people to be astute enough to not be giving out their money to scams,” said Landis.

The Southwick Police Department notified the Select Board office that they have sent out a town-wide notification so all residents of the town are aware of the scams.

If you come across this particular scam, or any other scam, please call the Southwick Police Department at 413-569-5348.
