SOUTHWICK- The Town of Southwick reported 11 new COVID-19 cases this week to bring the pandemic total to 517.
Southwick remains as a high risk community for the second week in a row after having spent three weeks as a moderate risk community. Southwick health officials said last week that at least 11 people tested positive for COVID-19 after a gathering at the Brass Rail Meeting House on March 5.
Public Health Nurse Kate Johnson said that the gathering is a big reason why Southwick returned to its high risk status. Because Southwick has had 33 cases in the past 14 days, it remains as a high risk community.
Brass Rail owner Jennifer Nolasco denied that her business served as a vector for COVID-19 spread.
Southwick’s report comes as Massachusetts, and the country as a whole is experiencing an increase in the number of new COVID-19 cases. On Thursday, March 25, Massachusetts reported more than 2,000 infections for the first time since Feb. 21.
The state is also closing in on getting at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine to two million residents. As of March 25, 1,985,856 Massachusetts residents had received at least one dose. 1,165,381 people are considered fully vaccinated as of March 25, meaning they have either received both doses of either the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine, or the single dose of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine.
