Southwick schools chief presents goals for district

SOUTHWICK – Superintendent Jen Willard gave her latest goals for the Southwick-Tolland-Granville Regional School District to the school committee this week.

When addressing the committee, Willard informed them that her main goal is student learning.

“It’s really my focus as a superintendent, which is to improve student learning,” said Willard.

Willard also mentioned that she wants to focus a lot on mathematics and was able to see that firsthand when she visited Woodland School recently.

“What we’re doing now really does dig deeper,” said Willard. “That’s the highlight of my job, getting in the classroom and seeing the kids.”

Another goal of Willard’s is to make sure the school district has an effective communication platform with students, staff, and parents. In order to do that, Willard wants to enhance their social media presence, as they are active on a daily basis on their Facebook page.

Willard has also worked with all three principals in the district on making sure they have fair and effective teacher evaluations.

“They can really grow in a safe and supportive environment,” said Willard.

Amy Stack, a member of the school committee, is pleased to see that Willard goes into the classrooms at the schools to see what the students are learning from their teachers.

“To actually go in there and be with the kids is very appreciated,” said Stack.

Having kids in the school district, school committee member Pam Pestchke is happy to see the work that her children take home.

“I love seeing the math that my kids are doing in the school district, it’s real math,” said Petschke.
