WESTFIELD – While all vehicle owners would be well advised to protect their property by ensuring that vehicles are locked whenever they are unattended, residents of the Janis Road area of the city may have added incentive to lock their cars after five unlocked vehicle were entered early Friday morning.
Police Capt. Michael McCabe reports that investigators believe the break-ins occurred about 3 a.m. and all were located within about a half mile of each other.
Two vehicles were entered on Janis Road, two more on Loomis Ridge and a fifth was burgled on Crescent Ridge Road.
In each case, McCabe said, the vehicles had been unlocked and small amounts of cash were stolen along with GPS devices and other small electronic instruments. A wallet was also stolen from one of the vehicles.
However, a resident near the site of one of the burglaries reported finding a driver’s license, credit cards and other items on his front lawn.
The documents were subsequently identified by one of the victims as property which had been stolen from his vehicle and those items were returned to him.
