BUZZARDS BAY – Senior Jared Spicer (Carver, Mass.) scored on a breakaway 2:48 into the second overtime to lift Westfield State to a 1-0 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s soccer victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday, Sept., 15, at Clean Harbors Stadium.
Spicer’s unassisted golden goal came from the left side, as he broke in from 25 yards out for his second marker of the season for the visiting Owls (2-2-1, 1-0 MASCAC).
Both teams had chances to break the scoreless deadlock in the second half of regulation, with junior Hieu Nguyen (Weymouth, Mass.) hitting the crossbar for the host Buccaneers (3-1-1, 0-1 MASCAC) just five minutes after intermission and senior Bill Lund (Monson, Mass.) missing a breakaway just two minutes later for Westfield State.
Senior Adam Vieira (New Bedford, Mass.) had a breakaway opportunity as well for Massachusetts Maritime in the 62nd minute of play, as he pushed his attempt wide, and the two teams played a scoreless first extra session to set up Spicer’s heroics.
Sophomore Keith Hevey (Chicopee, Mass.) picked up the win in goal with a three-save effort for Westfield State, while senior Brett Young (Falmouth, Mass.) made four stops in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime as the Buccaneers outshot the Owls by an 11-10 margin for the contest.
