Sr. Maureen Martin, SSJ

WESTFIELD – Sister Maureen Martin (Thomas Mary), (4/10/34), beloved member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield, died in Framingham, MA April 8th, 2023. Born in Westfield, MA she was the daughter of Thomas and Mary (O’Connor) Martin.

Sister Maureen Martin (Sr. Thomas Mary) entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield from Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament, Westfield in 1952. She attended St. Mary’s Elementary School and graduated from St. Mary’s High School, Westfield. She earned an A.B. degree from the College of Our Lady of the Elms, Chicopee, and a M.A. in human relations and community affairs from American International College, Springfield.

Sister ministered in the Diocese of Springfield at St. Jerome School, Holyoke; and in Springfield at Holy Name School Springfield. She was Principal at Holy Family School and Holy Cross School in Springfield. She also served as Formation Director for the Sisters of St. Joseph. Sister Maureen later served as Director of Volunteers at Jessie’s House, Northampton. She also ministered in Springfield at the Shelter and at Open Pantry/Loaves and Fishes.

In addition to her Sisters in Community, she is survived by a cousin, John O’Connor (Terry) of California, her nieces, Peggy Carbonneau (Paul), Mayre Miller (Thomas Egan), Kerri Martin; her nephews, Thomas Miller (Susan), Kevin Miller and Paul Miller; Matthew Martin (Daniele), Sean Martin (Colleen), and Kyle Martin (Ada) and several grandnieces, grandnephews and great grandnieces and grandnephews as well as her sister-in-in-law, Renee Martin.

Sister Maureen was predeceased by her parents, Thomas and Mary Martin, her sister, Kathleen Miller (Thomas), and brothers, John Martin and James Martin (Aurelia) and a niece, Linda Atkins.

All services for Sr. Maureen will take place in Blessed Sacrament Church, Holyoke, MA on April 17, 2023. She will be waked from 9 A.M. with a prayer service at 9:30 A.M. The
Liturgy of Christian Burial will follow at 10:00 A.M. Burial will be in Mont Marie Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph, 577 Carew St., Springfield, MA 01104.
