Cause of death released for body found on tracks

WESTFIELD – Mystery still surrounds the death of a woman whose body was found beside the train tracks in Westfield nearly a week ago.
Pilar Logan, 57, listed as Pilar Adams Logan on the Campbell-Lee, Moody Russell Funeral Home’s website, was born December 10, 1957 and was from Ventura, California.
The Hampden County Medical Examiner’s office released the cause of death late Friday afternoon saying Logan died from “blunt force injuries of the head, torso, and extremities” and are ruling the manner of death an accident.
It still remains unclear how Logan ended up near the tracks.
Westfield Police received a call at 7:48 p.m. Saturday, August 1, for a medical emergency.
When police arrived, they found a body lying between the railroad tracks near Pochassic Road, according to Westfield Police Capt. Hipolito Nunez.
Westfield Fire Capt. Patrick Kane, Jr., said Monday, “the patient was assessed and determined to be deceased.”
Nunez said the body had identification on her and appeared to have been a passenger on Amtrak.
Craig Schulz, of Amtrak’s Corporate Communications department, released the following statement.
“The Amtrak Police Department is working with the Massachusetts State Police investigating the body of a female that was found along the tracks Saturday evening. There was a report of a missing person from Amtrak Train 448, which operated from Albany to Boston. The body has been identified as the missing passenger.”
The 448, known as the Lake Shore Limited, originates in Chicago. It travels daily between Albany to Boston from 3:05 to 7:55 p.m.
Nunez said, “the lady’s husband had reported her missing somewhere between Pittsfield and Springfield.”
Schultz said that the conductor then filed a missing person’s report.
A woman from the Campbell-Lee, Moody Russell Funeral Home, located, in Beverly, Mass. said Friday that Logan’s body had been cremated and that she couldn’t release any other information. No obit or local services are listed.
State Police Sgt. Tom Ryan said that troopers are assigned to all the local district attorneys’ offices to handle investigations such as these. Information from these investigations has to come from the DA’s office.
The executive assistant to District Attorney Anthony D. Gulluni said in an email Friday, “our office has no new information with respect to this case.”
A phone number for Pilar and William Logan in Ventura has rung unanswered for the past few days.
