SOUTHWICK – The Southwick DPW has reported to the Southwick Police Department that they’ve had a total of nine storm drain grates stolen throughout town.

On Thursday night, the DPW informed the police that four storm drain grates were taken. About two weeks ago, DPW said that five grates were missing. Eight grates were taken from the Berkshire Ave. area and one from Birchwood Road.

Brown noted that the missing grates from the storm drain can be an issue for people walking, running, and vehicles traveling down that road.

“It is a very significant safety concern that we have,” said Brown.

The DPW has been able to temporarily fix the issue, but have to order more storm drain grates for the future.

“Luckily we had enough grates in stock to replace those,” said Brown.

According to Southwick Police Sgt. Det. Tom Krutka, the police are going through the neighborhoods to see if there are any cameras that may have footage of someone stealing the storm drain grates. Krutka also added that he’s reached out to some scrap yards to see if they would take any storm drain grates, and the majority of them won’t because they know they’re most likely stolen.

The Southwick Police Department is asking that if anyone has any information on this incident, contact the department at 413-569-5348.
