Storybook season ends for WHS girls’ lax

An historic girls’ lacrosse season came to an end yesterday for the Westfield High School senior players, while for other Bombers it is to be continued next year.
No. 4 South Hadley held off fifth-seeded Westfield late last night 18-14 to advance into the Western Massachusetts Division I semifinals. The Bombers rallied to within one, 13-12, but ran out of steam.
“It was a great season – one for the record books,” said Westfield coach Paul Fenwick, whose team won its first league title in nearly 10 years. “Unfortunately, it had to come to an end tonight.”
“We had our chances,” he added. “Shots hit their goalie and hit the post.”
Senior Nikki Beliveau led Westfield with six goals and one assist. Teammate Ashley Pechulis chipped in four goals.
Five Bombers will also leave this season having achieved All-League honors, voted on by the other league coaches. Those players are Beliveau, senior Catherine Fenwick, junior Mary Boudreau, and sophomores and Victoria Whalen and Ashlee Owen.
