Students use art to learn math

The combined TReE classes of Mrs. Crean and Mrs. Carlotto at Westfield’s South middle School completed a collaborative venture that fused math, art, and technology. The students used real-life application opportunities to use scale factor to reduce and enlarge objects.  Using art to teach math allows students to connect, comprehend and understand the concepts.

The students used scale factor to enlarge key chain size snowmen into a court yard display.  Ava Gaughan said. “I learned how to use scale factor but my favorite part was painting.” Mason Haynes felt teamwork was key to finishing the project. He said,” The group who worked as a team, came out with a really good actual project.” After asking Abby Daley what her favorite part of the project was, she answered. “I loved admiring the finish products.” Student Snowman1Student Snowman2
