City looks into tree planting

WESTFIELD – The City Council’s Natural Resources subcommittee is not taking lightly concerns that the trees at Park Square were planted incorrectly.
Committee member Brian Sullivan said last week that a meeting was planned with contractors to discuss the topic.  However, none showed up.
“Mark Cressotti (city engineer) and Jim Mulvenna (DPW superintendent) updated us,” said Sullivan. “There seems to be a fine line between the he-said, she-said.”
Sullivan said the committee requested another meeting with contractors to be held at the green.
“This will be during the day to meet with contractors and arborists on site,” he said.
Sullivan said the committee is not sure the trees were planted incorrectly at this point.
“We don’t know if anything wrong is happening. It could be a matter of opinion,” Sullivan said, “But we don’t want to ignore it and find out too late that something was done wrong. The committee is trying to be proactive.”
