Teams set for ‘super’ Monday

Four Westfield High sports teams are set to compete in Western Massachusetts quarterfinal action – two at home, two on the road – and the St. Mary’s baseball team travels to Pioneer Valley Regional this afternoon and evening.
The No. 2 Westfield softball team (17-3) begins the big day of postseason action at home against seventh-seeded West Springfield (13-8) at 4 p.m., followed by the fourth-seeded Bombers’ baseball team against No. 5 Amherst (13-7) at Bullens Field at 7 p.m.
In other parts of Western Mass., No. 5 Westfield (13-7) travels to Wilbraham to play No. 4 Minnechaug (11-7) in a boys’ lacrosse game at 5. In girls’ lacrosse, fifth-seeded Westfield (16-2) travels to No. 4 South Hadley (11-7). Face-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
Elsewhere, No. 7 St. Mary’s (15-6) plays at No. 2 Pioneer Valley Regional (16-5) in Division 3 baseball quarterfinal action. In Division II, No. 7 Southwick-Tolland (12-8) plays at No. 2 South Hadley (7-13). First pitch for both games is slated for 4 p.m.

TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS ON THE MOVE: The All-State Track & Field Championships, originally scheduled for Saturday at Fitchburg State College and postponed until Monday, have been moved again. The championships will now be held Tuesday at 3 p.m.
“Weather for(e)casts for Tuesday are much better than Monday, and the safety of all athletes is our major concern,” the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association posted on its website Sunday. “Special thanks to the Administration at Fitchburg State for being able to adjust their schedule to accommodate us.”

TRACK NOTES: Ally Morin (2nd, 2 mile), Bridget Hartnett (2nd, 400 meter hurdles), and Keri Paton (3rd, javelin) will all compete for Westfield at All-State. Girls’ track and field coach Linda Rowbotham. …Former Westfield track athletes Becca Hardy (American International College) Matt Hamel (University of New Hampshire), and Amy Hewins (Holyoke Community College) have been instrumental in helping the program grow. All three have volunteered their time coaching the high school athletes this spring – Hardy with the javelin; Hamel, the discus; and, Hewins, triple and long jumps. Michael Rowbotham (discus, javelin, shot put) and former assistant coach Dan Geis also helped out the team. …For the boys, Westfield’s Juan Maysonet (110 hurdles), Nick Jacques (400 meters), Charlie Newman (100 meters), and the 4×100 relay team will compete at All-State. …Southwick-Tolland will have two lone representatives, Alexis Peterson (100 hurdles) and Mariah Collins (shot put), in Tuesday’s competition.
